Why travel insurance is your best travel companion
Dusting off that passport is one of life’s great pleasures and almost as exciting is the planning but unfortunately some Australians overlook one of the most important aspects of planning—travel insurance. It may not be as exciting as a reservation at one of New York’s hippest restaurants, but ‘If you can’t afford travel insurance, then you can’t afford to travel’.
The other side of researching your trip
The cost of a one-night stay in an overseas hospital bed can often outweigh that of a typical travel insurance policy and medicines and surgery overseas are often significantly more expensive, especially in third world destinations.
When you do choose your insurance, please read the fine print. Many policies don’t cover incidents outside the insured period, theft, high impact sports, ignoring public travel warnings, or new-for-old replacement of goods (they may just depreciate the value) and much more.
Be smart, be practical and be prepared
Securing cover early means you could also be covered for delays or cancellations to your travel. Purchase luggage locks, use hotel safes, register with DFAT’s SmartTraveller and make sure someone close knows your itinerary. And make copies of your passport(s) and ID and save them in your emails. But first things, first; once the big holiday you’ve been saving for is finally locked in, get your travel insurance sorted.
